Is agentic coding the future of software development?

Yes, but also very much no. Current AI is super advanced autocomplete. Autocomplete has its place – for example, boilerplate stuff that is easily predictable. NetBeans already autocompletes my constructor methods based on my code and the fact that most constructors have the same stuff in them.

I think that once the fuss has died down and the cost of running the things gets too real, we’ll be using AI for a better autocomplete and little else.

Blogging’s not dead

Open Mentions asked: Is blogging dead?

Short answer: No.

Slightly longer answer: No, not really.

Longest answer: Blogging never died; it has died back. That’s because we were all convinced to move into the walled garden of social media. That didn’t kill blogging. There are loads of blogs out there. Good blogs are harder to find. You have to look a little harder, is all.

Who is my favourate author?

Who is my favourate author? I’m truly afraid to say these days. The ones I love seem to do or say horrible things and get themselves well and truly cancelled. I’m frightened to go on the record as loving an author only to have to later quietly go off the record when they cock up. I think I will say that my favourite is whoever I am reading and still happy to talk about.

Tabletop: AI and gaming

The RPG Blog Carnival has landed at Of Dice and Dragons with the topic of AI and gaming.

This is my hot take.

There are only some places AI belongs at my table. Not as the GM. Not ever as the GM. GM, like player, is a human-only activity.

AI should at most serve as an assistant to the GM. For example, when I need a unique monster in the next ten minutes, or I need a token for the VTT, and I have some image gen credits left.

Otherwise, no no no no no no… Nope.

File this as Games on Open Mentions as there’s no Table Top Category yet… (hint, we want one)
